Diamond days at Nellai..!!

On sunday night me along with my friends Annamalai, Ashok, Chennappan, Sairam, Vinodh started our journey by train to Nellai to visit Chennappan's home. We reached his home by 11.30pm and had dinner at mid night. Next morning we started from home by 5.30 am to Babanasam and spent more than two hours there. We were accompanied by a Babanasam guy and he took to a place very close to dam shutters where we were not even able to swim against the water flow. It was really a wonderful experience. Then we went to Karaiyar and then visited Pana Theertham by travelling in a boat from karaiyar where the Tamirabarani river reaches the plains for the first time from mountains. Then we visited Agasthiar falls and returned back Nellai on that evening. Then me, Sairam along with Chennappan went to our friend Jaya's home. Jaya served us snacks. Her parents were more friendly and we had a nice chat with them.
On the next day we visited Nellaiappar temple and krishnapuram temple. The trip was really wonderful and we all enjoyed a lot.
One thing I cant forget at anytime is the way we spent days at chenni's home. We felt like we were staying at our home. We ate well there:-). His parents and grand father all took special care on each of us and we must thank them for making the days memorable diamond days with their love and care.

Bye Bye TCE

My golden days at our college,TCE came to an end on 24th Apr, 2008. On 24th we had our project viva-voice and with that almost everything with our college life except the degree convocation came to an end. Though I am happy to step-in the corporate life soon, I still am feeling for the fact that I'll be missing my college environment, class rooms, lectures, my friends, kidding at others and those small fights. In college i got the opportunity to attend various tech talks by our college alumni Joe Steeve, AnanthShrinivas, Stylesen and got ideas from them.

TCE is from where I got to learn a lot right from the engineering basics to programming, systems architecture, Free and Open Source Software etc., made many friends, got inspirational seniors like Praveen, Subramani, Senthil kumaran Muthusivam & many friendly juniors...I don't know with how many will I have contact after college life. Its really painful to think about it. But we have to move forward in life. I hope I never lose the contact with my loved ones. There are many many things I wanted to write about and that would increase the post size and hence i will end it here saying Bye Bye TCE..Surely will miss you a lot

Amicizia'08--celebrating friendship..!

We are celebrating our hostel final years day Amicizia'08 on 5th and 6th this month. We are celebrating the final year's day for the first time in our hostel and it is really enjoyable. Various contests are conducted among the final years and the highlight s the dance show under lights on saturday night. Many of our final year students danced and the dance by Habib of civil department attracted all. He danced like all the tamil heroes right from Shivaji, MGR to Rajini, Kamal, Bagyaraj and vijay, Ajith. It was really a wonderful performance.
In that show I danced for the first time on the stage. I was sitting and enjoying the show. Suddenly our General Rep Navin announced my name as the next dancer going to dance. They played songs from 23rd pulikesi and Aaru films. I moved here and there and tried putting some steps. I really enjoyed that experience. It was a sweet moment to be remembered for long time.
On sunday morning i was the judge for dumb charades. It was jolly to see friends acting on the stage. In the last few days i found many things going wrong in my way and this break really helped me to forget those things:-)

LIVESTRONG...!!!

Today I had a chat with one of my friends about various topics. Suddenly I found a new LIVE STRONG band in his wrist and i casually asked him the story behind it. To my surprise, He said it as the fashion created by star Vijay. I was shocked to hear this and some other friends there were also had the same idea. It was really a comedy to see those people justifying their words. Then after heard the reason from me, we all smiled at each other and left the place. Our college's last internal test day was thus become a memorable one.
The actual story behind it is-- was launched as a fund raising item for Lance Armstrong's, the tour de france champion for 5 successive years, Cancer foundation. Its purpose is to create awareness about cancer among people. It was introduced when Armstrong was struggling with testicular cancer by his fans to show their support to their hero. After recovering from the cancer disease he became the champion of tour de france breaking many previous records. He then started the foundation for cancer patients and used the LIVE STRONG bands to create the awareness about cancer disease.

eventful day@tce..!

Today was one of the most enjoyable days at my college. In morning we conducted the valedictory function of our ComputerScience&Engineering Association(CSEA). The chief guest was Mr.R Ganesh, Project Leader, TCS, Chennai. He is a leading expert in j2ee and other various technologies and our college alumnus too. He addressed the problems related to communication gap among the students from the south of TamilNadu. Our staff advisor Mr. Shivakumar read the annual report of our association. After that Prizes were distributed to all the winners of various events organized by CSEA. Now i am no longer a General Secretary and at this time I would like to thank all the final years who gave me this wonderful opportunity to lead the association and supported me in all the hurdles during this period. It was a great experience to organize various events for juniors and TecUthsav'08 along with my friends. We enjoyed as well as learnt a lot while organizing such events. I also like to thank another GS SaiKrishna and treasurer VinodhKumar for making my path easier these days. I never faced any misunderstanding problems with them and I feel it was great to work with these guys.
Another important thing happened today was we went college wearing our batch dresses. We enjoyed the well taking photos, cutting cakes at canteen, written scribbles in other's shirts and finally trear at Aarthy Drive Inn Restaurant by BalajiShrinivas. We had great fun there..finally ended the day by taking potos with Balaji's mom and das @ aarthy..really a wonderful day.potos here..

A trip to Ooty!

It's been completely busy days for the past two months for us. We,the final years', were busy with the tecuthsav and final-year project works. Last week we arranged an industrial visit to Ooty and Coimbatore.it was a memorable journey with my friends leaving colorful memories. We started our trip from madurai to coimbatore on 3rd march early morning by train and then to ooty by bus.
A journey through this endless stretch of road with trees on both side and a brownish hue everywhere is unforgettable. The trees were like kissing the blue skies. After reaching ooty we had a visit to BSNL office and then we visited the ooty botanical garden.Botanical garden is one of the most popular picnic spots in Ooty. It has over 2000 species of plants and trees from all over the world. With nurseries, green houses, ponds, walks and terraces informally laid around, it spreads to around 50 acres of land. I had great time with my friends there. We took potos there--recorded one of the sweetest moments:-).
We stayed in Ooty youth hostel. We played a game there continued the full night. Next morning we went to pykkara falls. It's a very nice spot everyone should visit in ooty.water falls surrounded by green trees and rocky mountains. The road to pykara is surrounded by tall trees and rocky mountains. The climate was enjoyable, a typical climate i love the most.
Then we came down to plains via kothagiri. We found tea estates on both sides of the road.lovely sight!
In coimbatore we visited the CTS campus. They gave a lecture on the Project Management. Then we returned back madurai by train...It was a great trip with my friends leaving everlasting memories. potos are here

TecUthsav'08 -- a success!!

TecUthsav'08 a national level technical festival organized in our college from 13th february to 17th february was a grand success with students from different colleges took part in it. Participants really enjoyed all the events and showcased their technical and managerial skills. The contests like car modeling, a 5-stage event called Lord of the ring, Biz-blitz a bussiness contest were some of the top hits of our tecuthsav'08. All the events conducted by our department were innovative and gave participants a real chance to expose their talents. Our college TCE is always famous for its hospitality and this was proved once again by our hospitality team.
As a General Secretary of our department(CSE)student's association I would like to thank all the event co-ordinators who really did a frantastic job. All the events were mind blowing and the participants will never forget these events. They were well planned and well executed. I would like to thank all the final years and third year students who made organising such a big event very simple.
Apart from few issues in oranising, this first edition of TecUthsav was a real success and I believe our TecUthsav will attract more participants from all over the country in the coming years.

End of Golden Boys' Era..!

Indian Cricket team once again proved themselves as a better touring side in the world cricket completing a eventful series against Australia. Though the series results read 2-1 loss to India, the way India played was exceptional. Indians outplayed Aussies in many aspects of the game.No other team had done this or even strained Australia for a victory. In the last few years Indians did well in all parts of the world Australia, Westindies ,Southafrica, England and Pakistan. Managed either a win or draw in most of these matches. Indians can say they are marching towards No 1 slot. Cheers India!!

At the same time India should worry about losing 4 or 5 top players soon. This tour may be the last australia tour for the Golden Boys of Indian Cricket-Sachin,Kumble,Dravid and Gnaguly who all had done lot to Indian cricket and the world cricket. Though we are having a pool of youngsters in the bench,how they would overcome the lose of these greats is a very big quetion. Its pretty sure that Indian Cricket is going to face a tough period atleast for few years.

I cant even imagine that India will get a player of Sachin's standards. No one will forget the days he defeated the world teams single-handedly. Kumble's determination, aggression, and variations in the bowling will be missed. Rahul Dravid's sound techniques and Ganguly's aggression and great timing will be missed. But for any team in the world cricket its quite common to lose few senior players and only the way they handle their lose will make the difference in their ranking. Aussies are doing good in building new teams and as all other Cricket Fans in India, I too hope India will come out of this tougher phase successfully and the next team will defeat the aussies in Australia in the next tour 2011. All the best team India.

Dialup in Linux-For Newbies

For new Linux users configuring their system for dialup net connection seems tougher if they are having the built in modem. The main reason is most software modems are based on Windows and they dont get detected in Linux. For that, corresponding drivers should be installed. googling will help in finding the corresponding drivers.

For example if your modem in WinXP is Modem-Agere Systems PCI Soft Modem(COM3), the driver agrsm can be used.

Before installing the driver be sure that the kernel headers are installed. The kernel names will be like
linux-headers-2.6.18-4
linux-headers-2.6.18-4-686
kernel-kbuild-2.6-18

The agrsm tar should downloaded from the site. Do the following steps
tar xzvf agrsm-***.tar.gz
cd agrsm
make
make install
The above steps will complete the driver installation. Then load the drivers
1) Next load the drivers
modprobe agrmodem
modprobe agrserial
which should announce creation of /dev/ttyAGS3

2) It is convient to create symbolic links, which dialer utilities will follow,to the real port /dev/ttyAGS3 .
ln -s /dev/ttyAGS3 /dev/ttySAGR
ln -s /dev/ttyAGS3 /dev/modem
Check with:
ls -l /dev/ttyAGS3 /dev/ttySAGR /dev/modem
whose output should include:
/dev/modem --> /dev/ttyAGS3
/dev/ttySAGR --> /dev/ttyAGS3

3) The first critical functial test is:
wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf
which searches through potential ports for modem responses.
A success will end with a section like:
--------
ttySAGR<*1>: Modem Identifier: ATI -- Agere SoftModem Version 2.1.40
ttySAGR<*1>: Speed 4800: AT -- OK
ttySAGR<*1>: Speed 9600: AT -- OK
ttySAGR<*1>: Speed 19200: AT -- OK
ttySAGR<*1>: Speed 38400: AT -- OK
ttySAGR<*1>: Speed 57600: AT -- OK
ttySAGR<*1>: Speed 115200: AT -- OK
ttySAGR<*1>: Max speed is 115200; that should be safe.
ttySAGR<*1>: ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 -- OK

Found a modem on /dev/ttySAGR.
Modem configuration written to /etc/wvdial.conf.
ttySAGR: Speed 115200; init "ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0"

Dialout Procedure
First edit in your dialout information with:

emacs /etc/wvdial.conf

In the sample below, the lines beginning with are informative, not essential.
The line order is not important.

[Dialer defaults]
# Lines begining with # are comments.
# wvdial will look for this file at /etc/wvdial.conf
# or /home/LoginName/.wvdial.rc
Baud = 115200
Modem = /dev/ttySAGR3
Init1 = ATZ
Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
# Lack of dialtone acquisition can be due to low line voltage
# Try inserting a "dial without waiting": X3
# Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 X3 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0
# In case of connection instabilities, specify a lower frequency:
# Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 X3 &C1 &D2 +MS=34

## Outside the USA, a country setting may be needed
# Init3 = AT+CGI=hexadecimal_country_code

ISDN = 0
Modem Type = Analog Modem
Phone = Dialout_phone_number
# if going through a switch board, a perhaps necessary pause can produced with a comma:
# Phone = 1,Dialout_phone_number
Username = LoginName
# if Internet Provider is MSN.net, use under Linux: MSN/LoginName
Password = YourPassWord

## If CONNECT is achieved but browsing fails, try activating the following line
# Auto DNS = yes
## To make a logfile wvdial.out
# wvdial 2>&1 | tee wvdial.out
# # For some Internet providers, the following line is necessary
# Stupid Mode = yes
## for other wvdial options, do "man wvdial" or see the documentation in
## /usr/share/doc/wvdial/
## End wvdial.conf

The above procedure will work if you have installed wvdialconf wvstreams and other required packages.
Ok next time meet me through linux;-)

Disabling User Accounts in Linux

In linux the users can be disabled from accessing their shells temporarily by one of these methods

1.The linux store the encrypted passwords of the users in /etc/shadow file.
By replacing the encrypted password (second field) with * or !, the user cannot login.

2.By using the passwd command the super user can lock the account
passwd username -l
This will add a "!" infront of the encrypted password in /etc/shadow file
To unlock the account,
passwd username -u can be used.
This will remove the "!". This can be done manually too

3.By using chpass command the default shell can be changed to /sbin/nologin
chpass -s /sbin/nologin {username}

Bharat Ratna's inspirational address @ TCE

Last week i got an opportunity to listen Dr.Kalam's address in our college.It was the second time i had listened his address. This time i was more attracted by his words. He came to our college golden jubilee celebrations and attracted each and every student by his words.

India's former President started his address in tamil and mentioned his poem he read in the Parliament.

While mentioning the need for imagination he said Inventions and discoveries have emanated from creative minds that have been constantly working and imaging the outcome in the mind. With imaging and constant effort, all the forces of the universe work for that inspired mind, thereby leading to inventions or discoveries.

He said technology as one of the important factors to improve our economy. He compared the India's innovation index which is 23 with the countries ranking high and said india is ranked 48 in global competitiveness.

Dr.Abdul Kalam's words about India's profile in the year 2020 :

1. A Nation where the rural and urban divide has reduced to a thin line.
2. A Nation where there is an equitable distribution and adequate access to energy and quality water.
3. A Nation where agriculture, industry and service sector work together in symphony.
4. A Nation where education with value system is not denied to any meritorious candidates because of societal or economic discrimination.
5. A Nation which is the best destination for the most talented scholars, scientists, and investors.
6. A Nation where the best of health care is available to all.
7. A Nation where the governance is responsive, transparent and corruption free.
8. A Nation where poverty has been totally eradicated, illiteracy removed and crimes against women and children are absent and none in the society feels alienated.
9. A Nation that is prosperous, healthy, secure, peaceful and happy and continues with a sustainable growth path.
10. A Nation that is one of the best places to live in and is proud of its leadership.

He then mentioned 7 challenging research areas where we can focus on. They are increasing the efficiency of photovoltaic cells, nuclear power generation using thorium based reactors, proteomics-the study of all proteins expressed by the genome of a cell, HIV/AIDS vaccine, stem cell research, earth quake forecasting systems, finding a method to find the quantum of rainfall in a particular area for a particular cloud condition within a specified duration.

Then he addressed how our college should grow in the coming decades.

you can read the exact content of his addressfrom his website
